Alzheimer’s Disease: The Promise of Coconut Oil

Many people avoid coconut oil because they think it is bad for them. Actually, the opposite is true. Extra virgin, organic coconut oil, a medium-chain triglyceride, is one of the healthiest oils you can use. This video focuses on coconut oil and Alzheimer’s, but coconut oil has a host of other health benefits as well: http://www.cbn.com/media/player/index.aspx?s=/mp4/LJO190v1_WS

What’s That On Your Lettuce? Cow, Pig and Chicken Collagen? Yuk!

Yes, it is true. Quote from the article: “Your produce is being dipped and sprayed with an experimental host of holy horrors in the name of ‘food safety’ and longer shelf-life. Prepare yourself to be shocked and amazed that our Federal agency that is designed to protect us, the Food and Drug Administration, is allowing these dangerous and unhealthy practices to be perpetrated on an unwitting public, all in the name of profits.” http://realitybloger.wordpress.com/2012/01/08/that-isn-wax-on-your-apple/

Neti Pots and Amoeba

In recent days, I’ve received a number of emails with links to this article…”Brain-Eating Amoeba Kill Second Neti Pot User.” Apparently, two Louisiana folks who were using neti pots died of a rare infection with an amoeba by the name of Naeleria fowleri. This amoeba can enter the patient’s nose, and cause a menigoencephalitis which can destroy the brain. Ordinarily, this amoeba might enter the nose when a person swims in freshwater lakes, rivers or streams contaminated by the amoeba. In these two cases, the amoeba entered the nose through the neti pot.

The take home message is not that one should stop using neti pots, but rather that one should use distilled water or otherwise purified water, rather than tap water, in the neti pot. It is self evident that one would not want to use the heavily chemicalized water that flows from our taps, but not self evident that that very same tap water may contain “brain eating” amoebas. So… please be careful that you use pure water in your neti pot, and be sure to wash and dry the neti pot thoroughly after every use. (Having said that, the two neti pot users included, a total of 32 cases of this amoeba have been documented in the United States in the last 10 years, making it somewhat more likely that you might win the lottery than acquire this infection from rinsing your sinuses. You might, however, want to be wary of dunking your head in questionable swimming holes.)

The Most Ridiculous Article on Supplements Ever Written!

This is one of the more ridiculous news articles that we’ve seen of late. Entitled “Popping a multivitamin can lead to debauchery,” this article argues that people derive a false sense of security from believing that their multivitamin can help them with their health, and that they therefore engage in more risky behavior. As this increased incidence of risky behavior occurs even when people were given a placebo, rather than a multivitamin, it implicates our pill popping culture more than multivitamins. The efficacy of placebos is no secret in medicine. Studies show that, in most cases, SSRI anti depressants are no more effective at treating depression than placebo. How about an article entitled “Popping Prozac can lead to a false sense of happiness?”

How can I tell the difference between the normal spitting up a baby does and something more serious?

This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many possible responses, from “that’s normal” to “hmmm.” The first question is when you mention “milk,” do you mean breast milk? I’ll assume that you do. A couple of things you might check on… breast milk carries antigens found in the food mom is eating. If mom is having cow’s milk products, your baby will most likely have a negative reaction — from colic to vomiting. Other foods that might affect a baby to vomit include cruciferous veggies, beans, and any fermented products. If a food gives a breastfeeding mom gas, the baby will probably experience some discomfort as well. A good test would be for mom to eat only hypo-allergenic foods for a couple of weeks and take note of how the child responds, then introduce foods back in, one by one, and continue observing the response. You should work with a health specialist on this one.

Also, strange to say, some babies are just allergic to mother’s milk. I was, and I’ve seen it before. A goat’s milk based formula can help here.

SOY: NOT FOR KIDS

Soy in any form should never be given to infants. Just plain soy milk is devoid of the vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids that an infant needs. Soy formulas, which are required by law to be heavily supplemented with essential nutrients, have been implicated in ADD/ADHD and brain damage. Soy also suppresses thyroid hormone and has a powerful estrogenic effect, just like giving your baby birth control pills. If you must supplement your breast milk for whatever reason, I recommend using a fortified goat milk based formula.

How To Wean Your Child: The One Way That Works

When our son was one year old, he weaned himself. He just started staring at the breast and was more interested in being close to his mother than nursing. No trauma, no hurt feelings — we were lucky. Almost everyone struggles when the wee ones are being weaned. Parents have an instinctual response when their child is screaming for breast milk: they want to soothe and comfort, no matter what it takes. If you search the internet, there are countless stories and strategies for weaning, but they all boil down to one thing: to wean, you must deprive your child of the breast. This is hard for the parents, and hard for the child. I don’t need to repeat the stories and tips in this short piece that you can discover for yourselves by Googleing.

The strategy that seems to work best is on the first night when your child starts crying for breast milk, look at the clock and wait 10 minutes before offering the breast. No matter how many times the child calls for milk that first night, wait 10 minutes before each time you respond. The next night, wait 15 minutes before responding to calls for milk. The third night, 20 minutes. Add five minutes to each night during the weaning process The ideal situation is to have a snooze button for this process and not have to go to work for about a week (hah!). During the day during the night time weaning process, allow the child to nurse as he/she requests, have lots of kinship and snuggle time. Show your child he/she is loved and treasured.

The goal is to train your child to go of longer intervals between nursings. Yes, this will be hard. You will be tempted to give in just to get back to sleep. But if you can stick with the program, expect results within a couple of weeks. Keep in mind that this is a training process and that your child will adapt as adaptation is what their focus is during the early years of life.

On Glandulars and Protomorphogens

In the days of the hunt, the hunted animal’s glands were prized by the hunters. In modern times, far fewer hunt, and animal glands are for the most part not prized. Glandular medicine does, however, have its place. Armour thyroid is one of the most well known medicines produced from animal glands. And a number of companies either utilize animal glands in their products, or specialize in providing animal glandulars for medicinal use. Several companies specify that their glandulars are neonatal glandulars, inferring that the glandular product is more likely to be free from toxins.

While vegetarians may be ethically opposed to, and others are wary of the prospect of “harvesting” animal parts for human consumption, or of ingesting animal products, glandular products have proven to be enormously helpful in treating human glandular disorders, adrenal and thyroid disorders in particular.

Most supplements designed to support glandular function contain whole glands, which are given to provide all components necessary to the function of the gland in question. Armour thyroid, naturethroid and westhroid are thyroid glandulars which contain specific amounts of the thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. These glandulars are often much more effective than taking T4 (Synthroid or Levothyroid or a compounded pharmacy T4) and/or T3 (Cytomel or a compounded pharmacy T3).

At a more refined level, cytosols are extracts which are taken from the cytoplasm of the gland, and contain the output of the glandular cells. Protomorphogens are extracts of the nucleic acids from the nucleus of the cell. These nucleic acids control the function of the cell. At a subtle level, homeopathic glandular preparations are used to impact the energetic pattern which underlies the gland.

Any or all of these types of glandulars may be indicated and effective in treating an array of glandular conditions.
