Why get nutrients using an IV? Don’t we get all we need from our food?
In a perfect world, it would be very true, but the typical U.S. diet lacks nutrient content – and even if we are consuming a stellar diet, the nutrient quality in our food has declined steadily over the last century.
Also, thanks to substances added to our food by agribusiness, in addition to today’s abnormal levels of general stress, plus allergies, genetics, infections, and other factors, many people’s gastrointestinal function is compromised, resulting in impaired digestion, sub-optimal capacity to break down foods, and compromised ability to absorb the vital nutrients our bodies require to maintain health.
When we receive nutrients intravenously, they bypass the digestive system and are delivered directly to the cells. Thus each cell is bathed in a nutrient-rich solution in the most bio-available form, allowing the greatest potential for healing and improved ENERGY.
What is the Myers cocktail?
In its most basic form, the Myers cocktail is an intravenously delivered nutrient supplement that was first formulated more than 40 years ago to promote healing and restore energy and stamina.
The standard Myers cocktail we offer at Pacific Naturopathic contains magnesium, calcium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C.
We may suggest other vitamins or ingredients be added to the Myers’ cocktail protocol, depending on a patient’s diagnosis and overall health, as well as any health conditions being treated.
What conditions is the Myers cocktail useful for?
Aside from its value for promoting healing and boosting energy and stamina, the cocktail is indicated for:
- Chronic acute viral illness and colds
- Vitamin deficiency
- Anxiety, stress, depression
- Migraine or tension headaches
- General immune boost,
- Gut malabsorption, leaky gut
- Support for cancer patients.
It can also be useful in situations where oral nutrients and other therapies are not working. When nutrients are given intravenously, they bypass the digestive system, allowing much higher levels of nutrition to be delivered directly to the cells.
If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help you feel more calm and relaxed. If you are feeling unusually fatigued and run-down, it can help boost your energy (after ruling out any diseases that may be causing these common symptoms).
Are there formal studies on the Myers cocktail?
Yes. Yale researchers tested the Myers cocktail with patients in a double-bind placebo-controlled randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels, and quality of life. Significant improvements were shown in all relevant outcome measures with the Myers’ group, while none were present in the placebo group.
Currently approximately 274 clinical research trials are employing intravenous micronutrient therapy. About half of these concern treatment for or prevention of cancer. The remainder cover a wide range of medical and health conditions.
How many treatments will I need to feel better?
Patients vary in the number of treatments needed. A typical approach is to have an infusion once or twice per week. Some patients experience improvement after one treatment, while many report significant healing by the fourth infusion.
People with chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment several times per week, or every few weeks to regain their energy.
How long does a Myers infusion take?
A typical Myers drip takes about 15 minutes.
Is It Safe?
The Myers Cocktail is a safe, effective, minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most people. It carries an extremely low risk of serious adverse side effects. If the protocol is administered quickly, there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing due to the rapid rise in magnesium. Some patients may have a taste of vitamins shortly after receiving an infusion.
How should I prepare for an infusion?
It’s best to prepare for the Myers’ by drinking plenty of water and having food in your stomach before you come to the office.
