A Brief Introduction to the Adjunctive Cancer Care Program at Pacific Naturopathic

Elements of a Mediterranean Diet for adjunctive cancer care.

When I welcome new cancer patients to Pacific Naturopathic, I tell them about the four components of our adjunctive cancer care program and how they offer support for the cancer experience.

  1. The first leg of the program is oral supplementation.Regardless of a superabundance of internet hype, oral  supplements are not going to cure cancer, unaided.  Rather, they perform important support functions such as addressing any nutrient deficiencies, decreasing inflammation, preventing angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels that can help the cancer spread), stimulating the immune system, and in some cases, causing some cancer cell apoptosis (death).
  2. The second leg of the program relates to the mind/body connection. This part of our program is often the most difficult for new patients to understand and implement, as Western medicine almost entirely addresses illnesses at the physical level.  Yet it has been proven beyond any possibility of lingering dobut by countless scientific studies that stress undermines immune system functioning and predisposes people to opportunistic illnesses.

Also, old tapes playing in the subconscious and conscious mind that reflect cancer-caused anxieties will contribute to poor outcomes.

We have an extremely effective mind/body treatment program at Pacific Naturopathic, though sadly few patients take advantage of these opportunities.  Working on the mental/emotional level is simply not part of our society’s traditional approach to dealing with disease, including cancer.

  1. The third leg of the program is nutritional.  The approach to diet for cancer patients that we’ve developed at Pacific Naturopathic is mostly about common-sense healthy eating: low carbs, lots of fruits and vegetables, adequate non-red meat protein, healthy oils, and eating mostly organic while avoiding food additives of all kinds, and more.

The foundation of our recommended cancer-support diet is a modified version of the Mediterranean diet, which has long been regarded as the healthiest diet in the world.

For patients from strong ethnic traditions, we can help them modify their diets to assist them with their cancer care.

  1. The fourth leg is our intravenous therapy program.  The heart of the IV program is intravenous vitamin C, which countless studies have found to be therapeutically effective in treating most cancers.

We also offer IVs that address the peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy, and IVs that address nutrient deficiencies resulting from the cancer experience.

Not mentioned above are additional elements we consider essential to effective cancer therapy, such as consistent exercise, a dedicated support community, and integrating a spiritual component into the overall cancer treatment and support scenario.
