The Healing Power of Expansive Thoughts and Feelings

Wise seers throughout history have suggested that the realm of Spirit is the schematic for the lower planes of existence.

“As above, so below” is a saying whose origins are lost in the mists of antiquity.

From my life and my work, I can testify that whatever health karma we’re working out, the journey is smoother and the trials are more meaningful if we can remember to remain centered Spirit.

Easy to say – not so easy to do!

Still, as a physician who works daily with very ill people, it’s been my experience that illness offers us powerful opportunities to grow spiritually.

Wise teachers tell us that God is living through each of us, and that the task that the Divine has set before us is to learn to see beyond the differences and relate each other at that level of our mutual oneness.

A secret that I’ve discovered is that, while grand spiritual experiences are certainly welcome, we can draw God’s presence to us with extremely simple practices that expand our awareness to include the sacred.

A simple smile can bring a feeling of joyful inner expansion. The scriptures of all true religions tell us that those feelings are divine.

A kind word can open channels of powerful blessings to others.

A loving offer of help can free us to act as instruments for the divine help and enrich us in the process.

Science has shown that our bodies and minds are healed when we express expansive feelings of love, kindness, and compassion. Those radiant feelings make our hearts beat in a beautiful smooth sine-wave rhythm. (See research by Heartmath Institute.)

On the other hand, negative feelings of hatred, resentment, anger, spitefulness and revenge are poisonous – they make our hearts vibrate chaotically, like a car that’s lurching as it runs out of gas.

The heart is the body’s most powerful electrical emitter – its vibrations carry healing or harmful messages to every cell of our bodies. Our bodies and minds can work far more efficiently and effectively in the presence of loving, expansive thoughts and feelings. Love, as science has shown, is the most practical emotion, by far.

At a recent workshop, I told the following story.

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew that it would be a long journey, so he packed his knapsack with Twinkies and a root beer before he set out on his quest.

After he’d gone about three blocks, he saw an old man sitting in a park, staring at the pigeons.

The boy sat next to the old man and took out a root beer. Noticing that the old man looked hungry, he offered him a Twinkie which the man gratefully accepted with a smile. His smile was so warm and genuine that the boy longed to see it again, so he offered him a root beer.

Again, the man smiled – the boy was delighted! They sat eating and smiling without saying a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized that he was tired, and rose to leave, but before he had gone a few steps, he turned and ran back and gave the man a hug, which was rewarded by the warmest smile of all.

When the boy arrive home, his mother was surprised by the his joyful countenance and said, “What did you do that made you so happy?

The boy said, “I had lunch with God. You know what? He’s got the most beautiful smile!”

Meanwhile, the old man returned to his own home, where his son met him at the door and exclaimed, “Dad, what did you do that made you so happy?”

The old man said, “I ate Twinkies in the park with God.” Before his son could respond, he added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Imagine what the world would be like if we could always see the God in each other.
