This is one of the more ridiculous news articles that we’ve seen of late. Entitled “Popping a multivitamin can lead to debauchery,” this article argues that people derive a false sense of security from believing that their multivitamin can help them with their health, and that they therefore engage in more risky behavior. As this increased incidence of risky behavior occurs even when people were given a placebo, rather than a multivitamin, it implicates our pill popping culture more than multivitamins. The efficacy of placebos is no secret in medicine. Studies show that, in most cases, SSRI anti depressants are no more effective at treating depression than placebo. How about an article entitled “Popping Prozac can lead to a false sense of happiness?”
