Understanding the True Nature of Light

Light is a universal and fundamental symbol with no cultural boundaries. It spans time, geography and belief and is central to almost every religion and spiritual practice.  It represents illumination and intelligence. Enlightenment, being filled with the presence of the divine, is the goal of the spiritual quest.

Often neglected in healthcare is the spiritual calmness accompanying a light-filled consciousness that allows the seriously ill to walk their healing path with serene awareness.

But in the midst of the life countless life disruptions and anxieties that often accompany a serious illness, it is easy to focus all attention on the needs of the physical realm to the exclusion of everything else.

I have a handout that I give my cancer patients: “Using Cancer as a Vehicle for Transformation.”  Most people tell me something to the extent of, “I understand, but I’m not there yet.”

The reality is that the only true comfort for an ill person comes from diving more deeply into the pool of light that is available to all of us within.

Umm… Having re-read that sentence, I’m suddenly aware of how much it may appear to readers like New Age gobbledygook.  But when you’re trying to communicate a truth that is part of the Divine schematic for all creation, there are few words to describe the peace that accompanies the experience of Divine Light in our lives.  The light is an experience, not a concept to be grasped by the mind.

Learning to resonate with the inner light is insanely difficult in our materialistic world, where accumulation and possessions are mistaken for the path to happiness.

As I walk my neighborhood, I notice garages no longer house cars, but are stuffed to overflowing with possessions.

Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the wisest men of the 20th Century, said, “Environment is stronger than will.”

It takes a supreme degree of will power to recognize, accept and act on the basic truth that everything in the material world, including our bodies, will eventually become anachronistic and pass.

“Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return.”  The only permanence is the underlying foundation of light that infuses all creation.

The experience of light is the common element in the many books written by people who were declared dead and somehow came back.  The light-filled tunnel is a common element in the stories of many returnees. But we don’t have to be at death’s door to experience that light.  That light is available to us now.  Our true life’s mission is learning to access the light so that we can live in spiritual calmness and walk our healing paths with equanimity and fearlessness, surrendering attachment to outcomes for the joy and sacredness of every moment.

Throughout history there have been many great souls who’ve given us clear instructions for how to connect with this fundamental light.

Required is seriousness of purpose and uncompromising diligence.

As we grow in consciousness and learn to access the light, we become finely attuned to its power, protection, guidance and blessings. And as we awaken more and more the Greatest Truth dawns on us: we are immersed in the light – the light is within ourselves – we (collectively) are the light!
