Millions of pilgrims wend their way to the holy shrine of Lourdes, coming from all corners of the earth, hoping for healing for themselves or others.
Of those millions, some experience miraculous healing. What distinguishes those few from the many?
Healing, whether spiritual, medical, or alternative, can never happen through mere wishful thinking. So, what is the scientific basis for “miraculous” cures?
The mind is a powerful factor. People have experienced healings after taking inactive placebo medicines or undergoing “placebo surgeries.” We now know that the brain is far more capable of promoting healing than we formerly assumed.
We’ve come far enough in our study of energy medicine to know that it works by the scientific principle of vibratory resonance.
Vibratory resonance simply means that if you put a substance that vibrates at a very high, positive frequency near another substance, they will tend to harmonize their vibrations. A healing agent with a strong, positive vibration will tend to influence an ailing bodily organ in a positive way.
By the same token, spiritual healings happen when there is a very powerful resonance or attunement with the unlimited vibrations of Spirit. Spiritual healers attune themselves to this ever-present force and channel its healing energy. Similarly, people of faith attune themselves to the same energy and allow it to do its work.
There is no limit to the healing that can occur through spiritual methods. Doctors may tell a patient that their disease is incurable, but what they are actually saying is that in their experience the cure is unknown. This is not the same as saying that there is no cure.
Parmahansa Yogananda, the fully liberated master of yoga, described the healing power of Spirit:
“Those who know God can do everything. God who strews the flowers of Milky Ways on the garden of space, and God who lights the spark of life in the lamps of countless creatures, God who created every atom and feeling and thought in all sentient creatures, can do anything. His devotees who are one with Him can also do anything.”
Many factors must come into play to effect a spiritual healing. The power of the healer can prevail over disease or injury, if the healer’s contact with Spirit is very strong, and if the patient is sufficiently receptive.
With the greatest healers, less effort may be required of the person hoping to be healed. But, in general, the patient must also be receptive. God doesn’t go around healing people willy-nilly if their attunement with Him is lacking or nonexistent.
Attunement to the healing energy of the Divine requires strong faith, will power, and a deep commitment.
These factors can open doors for healing miracles to occur. The normal laws of physical reality fall away, and the lame can walk, and the blind can see.
At Lourdes, countless people pray and drink the holy water. Some experience great miracles; some may only feel inwardly uplifted and blessed. God responds to all His children scientifically, according to the power and sincerity of their attunement with Him.
