Curcumin: Powerful Anti-inflammatory and Toxic to Cancer Cells

Curcumin is one of nature’s most powerful  antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

Laboratory studies have shown that curcumin interferes with several important molecular pathways involved in the development, growth, and spread of cancer.

Curcumin can kill cancer cells in the laboratory and can reduce the growth rate of any surviving cancer cells. In animals, curcumin has been shown to inhibit the formation of cancer-causing enzymes and slow or stop the development of several forms of cancer, even shrinking tumors. Human studies of curcumin for cancer prevention and treatment are still in the early stages.

Scientific studies indicate that the body does not absorb curcumin well from food; thus, large amounts must be consumed for even small amounts to reach the bloodstream.

More-absorbable forms of curcumin have been developed, and because curcumin is fat soluble, it’s important to consume it with some form of fat.

Curcumin has important anti-inflammatory effects. Preliminary lab studies suggest that curcumin may protect against certain types of colitis, stomach ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and high cholesterol. Also based on these studies, curcumin may help treat upset stomach, diabetes, depression, HIV, uveitis, and viral infections.

At Pacific Naturopathic, we administer curcumin by IV infusion in carefully moderated doses, so that it can go directly to the cells where it’s needed. Preliminary results with our patients show that curcumin relieves inflammation caused by chemotherapy and lowers tumor markers on conventional cancer monitoring blood tests.

As naturopathic doctors, we consider curcumin yet another wonderful gift from the Earth. Curcumin has few or no side effects and holds a promise of powerful positive results for many conditions.
