This major advance in safe, well-researched, non-invasive therapy for brain health and healing is now available in our clinic to address mental fog, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke, brain injury, depression, anxiety, and other conditions affecting your quality of life.

Let’s begin with a question.

Would you, or would you not, like to enjoy improved memory and brain function?

(Can you imagine anyone responding “Not me!”?)

The brain is vulnerable to a large number of disorders that can be classified in three broad categories:

  1. Traumatic events (stroke, traumatic brain injury, global ischemia)
  2. Degenerative diseases (dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s)
  3. Psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder)

Numerous respected studies (see below) have shown that all of these seemingly diverse conditions can be beneficially affected by applying a specific wavelength of light to the skull.

The studies also show that this light therapy could be used for cognitive enhancement in normal, healthy people.

Other conditions that may be addressed by this type of light therapy include:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Autism
  • Herpes zoster
  • Lyme disease
  • Fatigue.

At a continuing education conference on neurology that Dr. Connie and I attended recently, we were presented with astounding new information on transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM).

Transcranial photobiomodulation is the application of low levels of red or near-infrared light to stimulate neural tissues.  tPBM  heals, regenerates, and protects brain neural tissue that has been injured, is degenerating, or is at risk of dying.

This therapeutic approach has been known for some time, but only now, after hundreds of positive studies, including several conducted by the medically conservative National Institutes for Health (NIH), are we have sufficiently confident in the treatment to begin offering it to our patients.

Here’s a small sampling of the studies. There are many others that indicate the positive effects of tPBM for specific brain issues (click the topic links to review further studies):

  1. For inflammation, oxidative stress, and neurogenesis
  2. For depression
  3. For cognition

How does tPBM work?

The patient sits, relaxed, for 15 to 30 minutes (they may read, or just close their eyes and relax) while a specific wavelength of light (810nm) is applied by a device that looks like a bicycle helmet with 320 diodes inside it that produce a light that penetrates the skull to affect the brain.

This particular wavelength of light is absorbed by cytochrome C oxidase in the mitochondria, resulting in increased blood flow, neuroprotection, and reduced inflammation.

  • Energy production (as ATP) in the brain is increased.
  • Oxygen availability and oxygen consumption are enhanced.
  • A protective antioxidant effect is stimulated, prolonging the life cycle of brain cells.

The light used in this LED therapy is non-invasive, painless, radiation-free, and non-thermal.

Compared with other therapeutic methods such as drugs or surgery, light therapy is totally safe, with no side effects.

tPBM therapy has a cumulative effect, thus we offer a package of 10 sessions. Our established patients only need to make an appointment. For new patients, a 15-minute intake ($50) is required before therapy.
