Intravenous Nutrient Therapy — a Myers Cocktail Q&A

What is the advantage of taking nutrients intravenously? Can’t my body get the nutrients it needs from the food I eat?

In a perfect world, of course, it’s true.

But let’s not even talk about the typical American diet, which is seriously deficient in nutrient content.

Marcel Hernandez, ND, of Pacific Naturopathic in Mountain View, CaliforniaAnd even with a stellar diet, the nutrient quality of our foods has steadily declined.

But even more important, due to the chemicals, toxins, stress, allergies, genetics, infections, and other assaults to our health in our lives today, many of us suffer from compromised gastrointestinal function.

The result is impaired digestion, and a decreased capacity in our bodies’ ability to break down the foods we eat and absorb the vital nutrients to maintain health.

When we receive nutrients intravenously, the nutrients bypass the compromised digestive system and reach the cells directly. Each cell is bathed in a nutrient-rich solution, making the IV vitamins, minerals, and other substances easily available in their most absorbable form, for the greatest healing and energizing effect.

What is a Myers cocktail?

In its basic form, the Myers Cocktail is an intravenous vitamin supplement formulated more than 40 years ago to promote healing and restore energy and stamina.

The standard Myers Cocktail that we offer at Pacific Naturopathic includes magnesium, calcium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C.

Other vitamins or ingredients may be added, depending on the patient’s diagnosis and overall health, and any specific conditions needing treatment.

What is the Myers cocktail good for?

The Myers Cocktail is indicated for chronic or acute viral illness, including colds, fatigue, fibromyalgia, vitamin deficiency, anxiety, stress, depression, migraine or tension headaches, general immune deficiency, gut malabsorption, leaky gut, and as a support for cancer patients.

meyers-cocktail-01It can be very useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies aren’t working, owing to the body’s compromised ability to absorb them.

When nutrients are given intravenously, they bypass the digestive system, so that a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered to the cells directly.

The Myers Cocktail can help calm and relax you if you tend to be anxious or overstressed. And if you feel fatigue and run-down, it can help boost your energy.

There are many diseases and symptoms that benefit from this therapy. Our patients tell us it’s like getting a supercharge of vitality!

Has there been research on the Myers Cocktail?

Researchers at Yale recently tested the Myers Cocktail on patients in a double-bind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels, and quality of life.

Significant improvement was shown in all pertinent outcome measures with the Myers group, compared with no improvement in the placebo group.

More than 270 clinical research trials are currently underway on intravenous micronutrient therapy. About half of the studies concern the treatment and prevention of cancer. The remainder cover a wide range of medical and health conditions.

How many treatments will it take before I begin to feel better?

As expected, our patients vary in their individual response. Some patients experience improvement after a single treatment, while many report significant healing by the fourth infusion. People with chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment several times per week, or every few weeks to regain their energy.

How long does a Myers infusion take?

A typical Myers drip takes about 20 minutes.

Is It Safe?

The Myers Cocktail is a safe, effective, minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most people.

It carries an extremely low risk of serious adverse side effects.

If the protocol is administered quickly, there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing. This is due to a rapid rise in magnesium in the blood. Some patients may have a “vitamin taste” in their mouth shortly after the infusion.
